Commissioning your own unique artwork

A weighty three columned page but one that previous clients have told me has helped make the commissioning process clear & straight forward.

Many people like Nick’s paintings but would prefer their own choice of canvas size or colours to fit within their available space or colour schemes.

Nick can provide just what you require by painting to your commission. So how does the commissioning process work?

It’s straight forward & not expensive. Consider the following:

1 How much space do you have?

2 Do you want the painting to be landscape or portrait orientation?

3 What colours & shades do you like & which do you dislike?

4 Your existing colour schemes.

Some advice on colour choices

Please bring some samples of the colours you like or any swatches of fabric or wallpaper you may have for the following reason...

Consider, for example, saying that you like “blue”. This is quite vague! If you can specify by showing Nick what shade of blue - that would really help.

You’d be surprised how many people say they like blue but bare in mind blue varies from very light duck egg blue through to dark ultramarine and all the blues in between! Likewise with all the other colours!

If you’d like the painting to include colours from your home or business’ current colour scheme… Nick can offer an additional service of visiting your premises then photographing the furniture, carpets & curtains.

This helps in accurately incorporating your colours into the artwork. If your artwork is for a business you may wish to bring some of your marketing material so that Nick can work within your branding colour scheme.

Get together with Nick & discuss!

Now you have your colours, canvas size and orientation in mind get together with Nick to discuss your requirements.

Ring: Nick on 07866 838627 or email:nick(at)nicksartworks.co.uk to arrange a time to get together.

Completing the commissioning form

When you meet with Nick he will guide you through the commission form - taking your contact details and then asking about your requirements.

Will it be portrait or landscape in orientation?

What canvas style? i.e. flat against the wall or chunky gallery style box canvas?

What prominent colours do you like and what colours to avoid?

Do you want a painting that has a landscape feel, linear or organic in style? Don’t worry too much about this now as Nick will discuss all this with you.

Nick will give you a lead time – this is how long it will take before the painting will be ready for collection or delivery.

Once all your requirements have been discussed & noted... Nick will give you a price quotation.

If you are happy to proceed, You & Nick will then sign the form and you will be given a copy for your own records. You will also be asked to pay a 50% non-returnable deposit which will be deducted from the final cost of your artwork.

What happens after the commission form has been completed?

Nick will start to work on your painting. When almost complete he will email you a website link allowing you to view what your artwork is looking like so far.

This is so that you can check it is matching your expectations. Please bare in mind that the colours used are based on the original brief you gave.

All paintings are abstract. So although you are choosing the colours and canvas size… Nick will be painting in his style. Therefore it is impossible to predict exactly how it will look.

This is normally what appeals to clients who commission work – the buzz of not knowing exactly what it will look like!

Commissions come fully strung so that they are ready for you to hang on your wall.

Completion of the commission

Once the artwork is completed, Nick will contact you to arrange collection or delivery. On collection/delivery you will need to pay the balance of the commission invoice deducting the deposit you paid.

Nick will ask you to sign a signoff sheet. This simply states that you are pleased with the finished result and that you have collected or received the finished work.

Finally Nick will give you a receipt & a unique “Certificate of Authenticity & Ownership” with the painting’s title & your personalised details showing ownership of the artwork. (You may wish to have the certificate made out into someone else's name if you are giving the artwork as a gift as many clients do.)

We hope this guide helps... please get in touch if you wish to arrange a meeting or discuss anything further.
